Marvelling My Birthday Away!

Tipping my hat in front of the Isabel Bader Centre for the
Performing Arts, Kingston. Photo by Susan Armstrong.

The title of today’s blog posting comes from Dylan Thomas’ “Poem in October”.

Here’s an excerpt:

My birthday began with the water-
Birds and the birds of my winged trees flying my name
Above the farms and the white horses…

And there could I marvel my birthday away…

O may my heart’s truth
Still be sung
On this high hill in a year’s turning.

Today (August 28) is my 70th birthday. My dear husband, Bill, has been spoiling me rotten all week, as has been my wonderful friend Susan A. from British Columbia. She has spent the last few days with us and accompanied me on several photographic expeditions to Kingston, Prince Edward County, and Hastings County. What a pleasure it has been sharing my photography with her.

Here are a few of the 700+ images I recorded over the last few days. What a great way to celebrate a birthday!

Enjoy.

Freeman Patterson, Edna, and Me

Freeman Patterson, the famous New Brunswick photographer (freemanpatterson.com), once wrote, “If you do not see what is around you every day, what will you see when you go to Tangiers?”

I’ve always liked Freeman Patterson’s photographs and would love to travel to New Brunswick to take one of his courses. In the meantime, I decided to put his philosophy into practice this week by combining my daily walks with Edna (our ten-month-old, forty-pound Basset Hound) with my fabulous Canon 70D camera to see what images the two of us could find while roaming the neighbourhood. All these images were recorded within a five-block radius of the house, all proving that when you look, you’ll see!

I have no immediate plans to travel to Tangiers, but Bill and I have booked our flights to spend next April in Australia. I have a feeling that the two of us will be seeing a great deal indeed. Alas, neither Freeman Patterson nor Edna will be accompanying us.

Enjoy these images of our east end Belleville neighbourhood!

Until next time.
